Presentations

dsc01287_editedThanks for presenting portions of your work place case study on Thursday. I am really impressed with the potential for your full presentations and am looking forward to reading your case studies .

I have updated the project schedule which has your presentation times and venues on. I have had confirmation from most of your supervisors that they will be attending which is really pleasing. Hopefully I will have your case studies marked and handed back (for those of you who have provided them) to you by the time you give your presentation.

Remember to come 10 minutes early so that you can check that the technical equipment is working – a must for any kind of presentation you would give. I would like to video one or two so please don’t be put off by the camera.

Any questions, queries or such let me know. Have a good weekend. I will also be making the announcement of who will get the trophy for excellence next week (after all presentations).

Oh yes all your photos (from the fieldtrip) are available on the student shared drived under the course title if your want to have a look.

Just a short summary of our last class. It was great to see you all. What I need from you now is to really start believing that the information you have is really good and if you can put it all together your case study and presentation will be fantastic.

Tracey has been the first to volunteer for Thursday’s presentation. She will be describing the organisation structure for both the companies she is working for.
So come on the rest of you and let us know what you will be discussing. Remember to make it a comment on this blog.
I will post again to confirm the time and location for Thursday’s class. Au revoir

I hope by now you are well aware of who this is? Like the United States you should be in the progress mode? Just to check and provide a helping hand there will be another class on Thursday 1.30pm to 2.30pm. in H611. I have set an afternoon time especially for you Teri.

Please also check that you know the times of your presentations – these have changed! . I will be sending out invitations early next week to your employers so that they can send a representative to gauge your success.

See you on Thursday.

Whats going on?

Circular QuayRhapsody of the Seas – was tied up at Circular Quay, Sydney in the weekend with heaps of tourists taking tours of the Opera House and generally looking around the CBD. There was also another P&O cruise ship at Darling Harbour.

I enjoyed a couple of days over in the big town of Sydney with some friends. Good weather – warm not hot and lots of good food and refreshments.

In the meantime I hope you have been completing your coursework and will have something to show me this week. I have booked  H301 for Friday – 1 – 2.30pm, if this is going to be too difficult can you let me know asap. I would expect that you would have a good body of work to show me or at least an overall plan and lots of information gathered.

As I haven’t heard from any of you I am assuming that you are all under control. Remember if you have any questions, queries contact me. Also keep an eye on the course schedule because I will start to put dates, times and venue for your presentation.

See you on Friday.

Hopefully you will have settled in to your work placement and starting to understand just what is involved in the day to day running of a tourism business.

The assessment guide should provide you with a clear indication of what you need to know and cover in your case study.

Please bring all collected information and work with you to class on Thursday – October 30, H301, 9-10.30am.

I enjoyed the opportunity to visit you in your places of work today. I will ring you Teri and catch up with you next week when you come down for the class session.

Hayley was busy in the kitchen and from all accounts is doing really well. Her employee had written up a work list – which I  thought was a really good idea. This gave Hayley some notes to check and complete. I suggested she should add to them – they will also be a good reference regarding what your duties were.
Tracey was looking well after her tonsils operation and was working with three former students which I had taught in past years (spooky). Of course she had a list of questions waiting for me. The first?? What is the word count for the Case Study. Actually she had some relevant queries which I will attempt to answer below:
1. Word count – isn’t one imposed but as always all information must be included
2. A marking guide for the presentation and case study – yes there will be one but in the meantime I would like you to be creative put in the information you think needs to be there, not just for the sake of ticking it off
3. Questions around the presentation – I shall provide a question guide for the presentation which should answer the question of what to put in your presentation
So make sure you keep an eye on the blog – at least every second day
Nok was sitting behind the counter at Taieri Gorge Railways, in her black business suit. She has been doing all kinds work and has been out on the train.
Sarah – MIA (missing in action) Gee her supervisor said Sarah had come to course because she had a class. Wrong Thursday Sarah – please read the blog
Teri – I am ringing her tomorrow (don’t worry Teri we haven’t forgotten you) and will look forward to seeing what she is up to.
What I now need from you – what you are going to be looking at. Now this doesn’t need to be a problem, it can be a comparison, a study of something that has been changed, or an analyse of an operation or some form of techology. Please write a comment back letting me know what your subject is. Some of you already know (great work)
It was really pleasing see you looking so professional and seemingly enjoying yourself – I have had very good feedback so keep up the hard work. Have a good weekend and I shall post again next Tuesday.

Tips

Some of you have been asking questions about your topic for a case study and I hope my comments have helped. Feel free to write in the comments section of the blog – if you don’t want to email. Just remember this is an open format and to keep subjects general eg. I have completed the background section of my case study should I jump straigtht into the present operation or complete an introduction?

I would expect that the format would run something like – Background, Introduction, Present operation etc. The case study should flow one topic leading into another. I have included some links for you to look at to get the idea of how different case studies are written. Remember these are just examples. Look at these summaries and then open the PDF’s.

You should be thinking about the studies you have completed during the year eg. marketing, selling, human resources, financial control and trying to apply some of the theory to the practical. Provide some visual resources eg. graphs, tables especially when dealing with statistics, visitor numbers, comparisons and of course images (pictures).

I will be coming out to visit you on Thursday – Hayley 9.15am, Tracey 10am,  Sarah, 10.45, Nok (can you let me know a good time), Jackie 11.30am. Teri I will give you a call on Thursday around 1.30 can you let me know a phone number.

I have also booked a class session for Thursday, October 30, Room H301 – 9.00-10.30am. Could you please all attend and bring your work and questions to date. I have updated the wiki schedule.

Hope you are enjoying your working life!

Update

Hi, how are you finding your work placements? Are you being kept busy? I will be out and about visiting you all on Thursday morning - so can you try and put 10-15 minutes aside for me.

Be thankful you didn’t get this job

The first joint class session will be held the following week  -  Tuesday,  October 28,  1-2.30pm so can you please explain to employers you will not be available during this time. If you feel you are going well enough not to attend then please let me know on Thursday.

By now you should have some kind of idea on what you will be writing about in your case study. Remember you don’t need to try and find a problem rather identify an issue or topic you would like to build information around.

In the meantime you can be writing some history on your organisation, collecting some direct information from other staff  members and collecting resources eg. brochures, photographs, business information. Look for points of difference that is, what services are being offered which are unique to the orgainsation or quite different from what is on offer anywhere else.
Please remember to return the contracts, signed and let me know what your case study topics are.

First task

This presentation should help you understand part one of the assessment activity. Don’t forget to take a good look at the the supporting resources.

This task will hopefully utalise all the skills you have been developing over the past eighteen months. Your final product will be measured against these skills.
