Presentations

Now your presentation time is coming up I thought it would be good to relay some information you will find helpful.

Presentation Points:

  1. Remember to introduce yourself/dress appropriately!
  2. Acknowledge your supervisor/employer – hand them the hard copy of your casestudy
  3. Acknowledge the other academic staff there
  4. Tell us where you have been working  and for how long
  5. What your research topic is
  6. Relax – you know this stuff, you worked there
  7. Start your presentation
  8. Don’t read from the slides – if you have cue cards use them to remind you of what you want to talk about, not to read heaps of information from and don’t flash them around
  9. Keep to your allocated time
  10. Golden rule if you don’t know the answer to a question then say so

The room D101 will be available before the alloted time so you can come and set up beforehand.

Good luck!

Time Frame

Here is a more structured timeframe for your casestudy hand in and presentation….

Presentations will take place during the weeks of November 7-18 (as previously relayed)

  • all written case studies are to be in 5 days prior to your presentation dates – you can start handing them in asap – as you can appreciate this will generate quite a lot of marking. Email these to me – binding can be done once all marking is completed
  • presentation dates will be emailed to you by the end of the week (Oct 28)
  • you can contact me regarding your casestudy with any questions, queries etc

Remember this is a casestudy and not a report. You do not require a contents page however you must include a reference page.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Presentations

Hey guys

Most of you will have started, be midway through or completed your work placement. I have started the timetable for presentations and will send these out individually to you through your OP email. I will need the casestudies in before your presentation to mark and for you to resubmit. A copy is given to your supervisor.

If you have not already could you please supply a name and contact details for your supervisor. If you have questions or are encountering problems with your case study please call or email me. Remember that not every organisation will fit the outline for your casestudy so you should try to think laterally about what information should be included. Keep in mind that your casestudy is 40% or your mark and your presentation 15%. You should know your organisation so that very little detail needs to be placed on your presentation slides (if you are using them – some of you aren”t).

I have been to visit Christine at Cadburys, Chris at the Royal Albatross Colony and Martin (but he wasn’t there) at Larnach Castle .

Thought you might enjoy this update from Shannon, who is at Fullers in Auckland…” Man oh man I have been off my feet ha ha, It has been going well.  Getting used to everything, I started working on the boats this Thursday and today.. 5am starts ha ha.

Im currently called a “floater”, I’m more or less working on the boats but I have to get signed off on each of them with certain bits like safety and using the radio etc. Been really fun though, I am doing the Waiheke trips and will probably stay on them for a while.

If anyone else wants me to post their adventures please let me know.

What you guys are saying….

Employment opportunities

Hey guys

Anyone want to work (paid that is) at the Elton John concert and The Big Night In. Fiona Lock is looking for some of our excellent students so if you are interested then let me know. There will probably be work at other functions at the stadium available as well.

I have also had a request from Ann Barsby for “some of your excellent students” to help with the Gasworks Halloween Event. It would be great to keep up you involvement here – not only for the community but also because this all looks great on your CV’s.

Let me know if you would like to be counted in for either or both of the above.

Thanks also for letting me know how you are getting on. I am on leave until next Tuesday so will start the visits again then.

Can you please check your email for graduation information – then put a comment on this post to let me know you have looked at it. Thanks

Visiting

Over the next few weeks I will be coming out to visit you in your work environment. I do this for two reasons; to check that everything is okay for both you and your supervisor and to assist you with your research project. So in preparation for these visits I would like you to consider what your case study will be on and to have as  much gathered information availabe as possible. I have already made appointments with Kate, Christine and Sarah S.

I will be on leave next Tuesday – Friday, so any future appointments will be after that date.

In the meantime take a look at this blog on the Taj Mahal, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Taj is the Persian word for “jewel”. Another place to add to your travel map.

Also take a look at the Otago Polytechnic Travel and Tourism Facebook page – have put some photos up from the fieldtrip to Wanaka. Keep in touch and add comments to the blog if you like.

Some more resources…..

Hey guys… would put some photos of the fieldtrip up but have to wait for Chris to bring them in (its complicated). Found this blog on travel experiences you may be interested in, take a look.

Wednesday’s ODT had an ad in it for work at the Royal Albatross Centre for the season. Paid training then on call until the end of November, followed by shift work until end of March. Well worth following up.
